Beginning Knitter

Finished Sizes: 2 to 4 years (25˝ chest, 13.5˝ long); 4 to 6 years (27˝ chest, 14.5˝ long)

Materials: 1(2) balls of Indulgence (75% extra-fine merino wool & 25% polyamide, 426 yds/100 grams); US 5 (3.75mm) & US 7 (4.5mm) single point needles; 16˝ US 5 circular needle.

Gauge: 5.5 sts and 7 rows = 1˝ over stockinette on US 7 needles or size to get gauge

Stockinette Stitch
Row 1 (RS): Knit
Row 2 (WS): Purl
Repeat rows 1 & 2 for pattern

SSK (Slip, Slip, Knit) Decrease
Slip 2 stitches one at a time as if to knit to RH needle, insert point of LH needle through fronts of these 2 stitches and knit.

K2tog Decrease
Knit 2 sts together

Instructions:
BACK
With US 5 needle cast on 70 (74) sts work in rib for 1˝ as follows:
Row 1 (RS): *K2, P2, rep from * ending K2
Row 2: (WS) *P2, K2, rep from * ending P2
Change to US 7 needle and continue in stockinette stitch starting with a knit row. Work until back measures 7.75 (8.5)˝ from beg edge.
Armhole Shaping
At the beg of next two rows bind off 4 sts then bind off 3 sts at the beg of the foll two rows. On the next RS row work SSK at the beg of the row and K2tog at the end of the row, 54 (58) sts remain. Continue without further shaping until armhole measures 5.5 (6)˝.
Shoulder Shaping
At the beg of the next four rows bind off 7 sts. Bind off or slip on to a stitch holder the rem 26 (30) sts for back neck.

FRONT
Work as back until armhole measures .5 (.75)˝. Armhole shaping should be complete before neck shaping.
V-Neck Shaping
With RS facing work to center of row. Turn and work only on these sts to the shoulder (place rem sts on stitch holder or spare needle to work later). Dec 1 st (work K2tog) at the neck edge every RS row 12 times, then dec 1 st at neck edge every 4 rows 1(3) times, 14(14) sts rem. Work without further shaping until armhole measures same as back to shoulder.
Shoulder Shaping
Work same as back.
Rejoin yarn at neck edge to held sts and work as for first half reversing neck and shoulder shaping. When decreasing at neck edge use SSK.

FINISHING
Block pieces to measurement. With yarn threaded through tapestry needle sew both shoulders tog and sew up side seams.
Neckband
Using US 5 circular needle and starting at left shoulder (as worn) pick up and knit 30 (32) sts down left side front, 1 st at center front (mark this st), 30 (32) sts up right side front and 27 (31) sts across the back neck, 88 (96) sts. Work every rnd as follows: work in 1x1 rib to 2 sts before center stitch, SSK, knit center stitch, K2tog, work in rib to end of rnd. Work neckband until it measures .5˝. Bind off all sts.
Armhole Bands (2 alike)
Using US 5 circular needle and starting at base of armhole pick up and knit 38 (40) sts to shoulder and then 38 (40) sts back down to base of armhole. Work in 2x2 rib for .5(.75)˝. Bind off all sts.
Weave in yarn ends. Block again if desired.
