Intermediate Knitters

Size: 6 to 18 months

Finished Head Circumference: 18.5˝

Materials: 1 skein Misti Alpaca Hand Paint Sock (50 % superfine alpaca, 30% merino wool, 10% silk and 10% nylon) US 3 (3/25mm) needle; tapesty needle. Shown in color HS03 Birds in Paradise.

Gauge: 6 sts = 1˝ on US 3 in pattern stitch or size to get gauge.

Note: The single skein is enough to knit two hats or, if you choose, you could knit a hat and pair of socks.

Knotted Openwork Pattern Stitch (multiple of 3 sts)
Row 1 (WS): Purl
Row 2 (RS: K2, *yf, k3, with left-hand needle lift first of the 3 sts just knitted over the last 2 sts; rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 3: Purl
Row 4: K1, *k3, with left-hand needle lift first of the 3 sts just knitted over the last 2 sts, yf, rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Repeat these four rows for pattern.

Picot Cast-On
Cast on 5 sts using cable method. Bind off 2 sts. Slip the stitch on right-hand needle back to left-hand needle - 3 sts cast-on. Repeat until you have the required sts cast-on.

Instructions:
With US 3 needle cast-on 108 sts using the picot cast-on. Cast on an additional 3 sts (111 sts).
Beginning with Row 1 of Knotted Openwork pattern stitch and work in pattern stitch until piece measures approx. 6.5˝ from beg edge. End with row 3 of pattern stitch.
Shape Crown
Next row change to stockinette stitch and purl (WS) decreasing 15 sts evenly spaced (96 sts). Continue in stockinette stitch and on the next row (RS) K2, k2tog to end (72 sts). Purl the next row. Next row (RS) K1, k2tog to end (48 sts). Purl the next row. For the last three rows work as follows:
(RS) K2tog to end.
(WS) P2tog to end.
(RS) K2 tog to end (6 sts)
Cut yarn leaving enough tail to thread through rem sts and to sew seam.
