Intermediate Knitters
Finished Size: one size to fit average adult head
Materials: 2 skeins Pemaquid (50 grams/60 yds), one in color A and one in color B; US 9 (5.5mm) 16" circular needle, US 9 double point needles, US 10 (6mm) 16" circular needles, and US 10 double point needles
Gauge: 3.75 sts = 1" over stockinette stitch using US 10 needle or size to get gauge
Instructions:
With color A and US 10 circular needle cast on 70 sts. Place marker and join being careful not to twist sts. Work in stockinette stitch for 3.5".
Next rnd (dec): *K8, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd
Next rnd and every alt rnd: Knit
Rnd 3 (dec): *K7, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd
Rnd 5 (dec): *K6, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd
Rnd 7 (dec): *K5, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd
When necessary change to US 10 double point needles
Rnd 9 (dec): *K4, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd
Rnd 11 (dec): *K3, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd
Rnd 13 (dec): * K2, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd
Rnd 15 (dec): *K1, k2tog, rep from * to end of rnd
Row 17 (dec): K2tog to end of rnd
Cut yarn, leaving a tail. Pull tail through rem sts, pull tight, and weave tail into WS
Ribbed Brim
With color B and US 9 circular needle pick up and knit 70 sts along bottom edge of hat. Work in K1, p1 rib for 2".
Next rnd: Cast off loosely 10 sts, work 15 sts, place these 15 sts on a holder. Cast off 20 sts, work 15 sts and place these 15 sts on a holder. Cast off rem 10 sts.
Earflaps
Work each earflap as follows: attach color B with RS facing, work in rib for 6 rows. slipping the first st at the beg of each row, knitwise on the RS and purlwise on the WS.
Row 7 (dec): Slip 1 as to knit, p2tog, work in rib to last 3 sts, p2tog, k1
Row 8: Slip 1 as to purl, work in rib to end of the row
Row 9 (dec): Slip 1 as to knit, k2tog, work in rib to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1
Row 10: Slip 1 as to purl, work in rib to end.
Con't in this manner until 3 sts rem
Work I-cord as follows: Slip these 3 sts onto on of the US 9 double point needles. Knit the 3 sts but do not turn work. Slide these sts back to the same end and bringing yarn from the back knit these 3 sts again. Rep until I-cord is desired lenght. Bind off
